NanoFlashing Textile

Waterproof fabric solves an obvious problem: it keeps outside water away from the skin.

But the same barrier also keeps moisture in. Sweat is trapped against the skin.

Sweden's National Institute for Working Life found only about 7% of sweat escaped a boot. The U.S. Army documented the consequence: “moon-boot syndrome,” a trench-foot-type injury from the wearer's own sweat, without outside water. The same warm, wet conditions occur inside a waterproof glove. University of Copenhagen researchers found staph bacteria on eczema-affected skin increased about 52-fold in 4 hours.

But removal and washing do not necessarily end the problem. At Paris's Avicenne Hospital, athlete's-foot fungus survived gear removal, a normal warm wash on every textile sample tested, and tumble drying. Empa, Switzerland's federal materials laboratory, found a single wash removed up to 45% of silver from conventional antimicrobial treatments.

The barrier that keeps water off your skin keeps the bacteria and the fungus against it. In the morning it goes back on.
