Federal agencies tell Americans to use a MERV-13 filter — but that rating is measured on a clean, brand-new filter.

In an EPA study, a MERV-13 air cleaner lost about 95% of its cleaning power after just 10 milligrams of smoke — about an hour's worth. The pressure drop never changes.

And a conventional filter catches what it catches — it does not kill it. In the warm, damp media it stays alive. The University of Minnesota recovered 39 species of live bacteria from the HVAC filters of two U.S. buildings. The University of Cincinnati measured a loaded filter shedding up to 12% of the spores it caught back into the air. The filter meant to remove them becomes a reservoir — held alive in the airstream it feeds.

Water

Water plants add chlorine to kill pathogens — but there is a limit on how much of it you can safely drink.

In an EPA study, researchers soaked the slime that grows inside building pipes in chlorine 12 times stronger than that limit. After an hour, the bacteria that cause Legionnaires' disease were still alive and still growing. A 12-hour soak did clear the pipes, but the bacteria were back within a month.

Ultraviolet light needs a lamp. Ozone needs a generator. Both run on electricity, and neither protects the water once it leaves the plant.

And none of them removes PFOA, the forever chemicals, from the water. Across 25 American water plants, treatment removed about 9% of it. At 4 plants in New York, treatment produced more PFOA than went in — up to 48% more.

Food packaging

Conventional gas-filled food packaging slows the bacteria that make meat spoil. But the package itself does nothing to destroy pathogens that reach its surface.

At Cornell, scientists added Listeria to minced raw chicken and packaged it in the same type of gas used commercially. After 3 weeks under refrigeration, the Listeria had multiplied nearly 1 million times. The gas suppressed ordinary spoilage bacteria.

It did not stop the Listeria.

And pathogens may be present before the package ever closes. During an FDA investigation of a Colorado packing facility, inspectors found food residue remaining on equipment after cleaning. The 2011 outbreak killed 33 people.

Refrigeration does not close the gap. The FDA says refrigeration does not kill most bacteria, and Listeria can multiply at temperatures near 0°C. Cardiff Metropolitan University monitored 43 household refrigerators for about a week. Not one remained at 5°C or below the entire time.

So the package can suppress the bacteria that warn us food is spoiling — while a dangerous pathogen keeps growing unseen.

Textiles

Waterproof fabric solves an obvious problem: it keeps outside water away from the skin.

But the same barrier also keeps moisture in. Sweat is trapped against the skin.

Sweden's National Institute for Working Life found that only about 7% of the sweat inside a boot escaped. The U.S. Army has documented the consequence: “moon-boot syndrome,” a trench-foot-type injury caused by the wearer's own sweat — with no outside water involved.

That warm, wet environment also gives microbes an opportunity to multiply. In a University of Copenhagen study, Staphylococcus aureus on eczema-affected skin increased about 52-fold in four hours inside a waterproof glove.

And taking the gear off does not necessarily end the problem. At Avicenne Hospital in Paris, the fungus responsible for athlete's foot survived a normal warm wash on every textile sample tested. Tumble drying did not eliminate it either.

The conventional answer has been to add antimicrobial agents such as silver. But those treatments can wash away. Empa, Switzerland's federal materials laboratory, found that after a single wash, up to 45% of the silver was gone.

Medical devices

The body has an immune system.

The medical device inside it does not.

A catheter, screw, plate or replacement joint enters the body as a passive surface. Once implanted, it cannot be routinely cleaned. If bacteria reach it, they can attach and grow unseen.

The numbers show the scale. About 75% of hospital-acquired urinary infections are linked to catheters. Researchers in Innsbruck found bacteria on implants from 32 of 57 patients who had no symptoms or signs of infection. And when a replacement joint becomes infected, the reported five-year mortality rate reaches 15% to 25%.

Antibiotics are supposed to be the backup. Resistance is making that backup less certain.
